Hovercraft Column Gets Planning Consent

MILESTONE PASSED WITH FLYING COLOURS

PLANNERS SAY IT ENHANCES THE AREA

March 2004 - Today marks the achievement of Planning Consent for the Hovercraft Celebratory Column to be raised on a wonderful site on Green Corner in Somerleyton opposite the Village Green. The Column design has been widely praised and although the site is within an area of outstanding landscape value, planning approval was unanimous at every level.

Sir Christopher Cockerell moved to Somerleyton in 1951 to develop his 'Ripplecraft' boat-building business. He began to think about how boats could go faster and in the space of ten years a new industry began to grow world-wide. We  are planning a number of events to make such an important part of our local heritage more widely known so that Somerleyton is clearly identified as the place where the Hovercraft story began.
